Abstract
Information Design is the practice of gathering, filtering, and presenting complex, unorganized data in accordance with effective design principles to make it viewable and understandable — and thereby effectively communicate to others - the essence, the meaning of that information. Students will engage in conducting independent research, gather data and then learn to collate, analyze, and categorize this data before setting out to visualize this data. Students are introduced to various visualization systems in the context of creating infographics.
Learning Outcome
-
Ability to see, collate and engage with data
-
Ability to question data and find answers through visualizations
-
Utilize variety of visual forms such as signs, symbols, metaphors, icons, charts and tables to create info-graphics
-
Use learning from Visual Tools to enhance the visual appeal of the infographics
-
Visualize information by synthesizing learning from typography, elements of design & semiotics
-
Create an impact and enable change through effective Social Communication
Assessment Criteria
CAPABILITIES
-
Understanding the terms data, information and knowledge and their role in creation of successful information visualizations
-
Ability to gather, understand, evaluate, and filter information
-
Ability to apply principles of Gestalt, Grid systems, Typography, Perception/Cognition, Signs and Symbols to create functional and informative piece of communication
STUDIO HABITS
-
Observe − Understand the ability to compress information into small chunks of visual annotations
-
Envision − Synthesize research and create infographics to visualize complex information with simplicity
-
Stretch and Explore − Push the boundaries by digging deeper to explore variety of visual forms and symbols
DIMENSIONS OF PRACTICE
INFORMED PRACTICE – Focus Area Knowledge
-
Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information and converting the same to Infographics using various visualization systems
CREATIVE PRACTICE – Crossing Boundaries & Navigating Complexity
-
Demonstration of knowledge and understanding in applying creativity to transform data with successful utilization of visualization techniques.

Project Brief: Designing a Personal Infograph (Find below, the infographic charts designed by some students)

PROJECT 2- Redesigning of a User Manual
Student 1

For the redesign of an instruction manual, this student decided to choose Fastrack's Reflex Beat fitness tracker. The product was purchased a couple of months back and he noticed that the item did not have a basic manual which explained the setup of the device. So he decided to bridge this gap with his new design emphasising upon-
- Key features of the product
- Set-up instructions
