Look at the myriad influences that design has on society, the role that history, culture, economics plays in shaping design, and the pivotal role that it plays in defining the zeitgeist of the times. Study, research and understand the work produced during the 18th and 19th century as well as the work of some of the pioneering designers of today in the area of visual design.

Learning Outcome

  • To develop an independent approach demonstrating continued critical understanding, supported by integrated written engagement.

  • To analyze and interpret the social, historical, and cultural context of key art and design movements, theories and practices establishing connections to the area of specialization.

  • To Investigate the impact of history and context in visual communication design.

  • To demonstrate research findings and insights generated through written work, visually and orally.

Assessment Criteria

CAPABILITIES

  • Learn to apply the understanding of historical milestones through 2D designs and communications.

  • Develop and demonstrate connections from the past that informs the emerging trends of present.

DIMENSIONS OF PRACTICE

  • Creative practice [Crossing Boundaries]: Have applied their knowledge and understanding in making, doing and generating through the synthesis of new and complex ideas, and in expressing, interpreting and problem solving within broader contexts related to the area of the Evolution of Design.

  • Informed Practice [Contextual Perspectives]: Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Evolution of Design that is developed through contextual, reflective understanding and application and have applied their ideas within the research or practice.

STUDIO HABITS

  • Understand art world

  • Reflect

Project 1

Brief: “Without an understanding of the era, a full understanding of the piece will be impossible.”

Pick up an art movement from 1900-1960 and do a critical analysis of it. Observe and extract the keywords from it resonating to its style, mediums, techniques, artists, believes etc. Create mind maps/ word clouds/ mood boards to showcase your findings. Draw connections with the mind maps to compare it with modern design practices. Design Posters (A3 size) to show your take on that art movement. The posters can be made keeping in view any context i.e., promotional, educational, display etc. It should display the historical inspirations in modern design practices. You may also pick any artists of the same movement to show their styles through your individual poster or any major styles that the movement boasts of.

Project 2

Brief: Reflect about the origins and evolution of typography and its journey to develop critical thinking about how typography has shaped to become a ubiquitous part of Visual Communication Design through a variety of lenses. Design a post card (4x6") digitally seeking inspiration from how typography has evolved and expressed into a particular modern art movement.

Project 3

Using the mark making techniques inspired from the history and enriched with the modern design thinking, come up with an interactive outcome within your predecided groups. Understand the objective of this task as "What is considered as the new age mark making and how do we visualize it in our creative practice?"
